Race Report Wakefield Park - February 2009

What a cracker of a weekend was had on January 31- February 1 for round 1 of the Superkart Club Of  NSW 2009 championship season. 20 Superkarts, 11 of those Rotax Maxes. With Wakefield Park many words come to mind, fun, Crooke, Paragon, Crooke, party, Crooke. Did I mention Crooke!! Yes that Jonnie Crooke….

HRT had 2 karts entered for this event, my 111 Hypermax, and the 2nd , number 11 Arrow machine came out to play driven by Andrew Salem with support by Pelly’s Giova Racing. Getting out of bed at 5am Saturday was a task in itself to head down the Hume for a bit of fun on the practice day. It was hot, damn hot. Both karts performed well, Deano was super dooper quick as usual, Crookey was spreading the gospel, as usual!! But we all enjoyed getting back out and back into it. We hit it back to the hotel around 4pm for a dip in the pool, and some relaxation. Dinner at the Paragon once again, this place is incredible, Chris J would be so jealous missing out, chuckle chuckle

Race day was a hectic affair with minor repairs needed in the morning to the good old number 11. Thanks to our great group of helpful max guys the kart was ready to rock and roll in no time while Shauna and I did club duties to get the day in motion.

Dalton Rowell was on fire in qualifying to set the pole for the maxes closely followed by Dean Crooke. Alan Dodge was 3rd quick while 111 came in 6th. Andrew running the 11 was a little further back but an awesome effort considering it was his 1st meeting. Jason Laker was on fire in his 250 inter setting pole for that class, and Jeff Reed had it smoking for pole in the 125 G/B.

Race 1 looked like it needed a trip to the last longer doctor after the race was red flagged after half a lap when 2 karts had a whoopsie at the fishhook. We were back out in no time for a complete restart where Dean drove off into the sunset for 1st, Alan  Dodge took 2nd with Mark Vickers rounding out the 3. I came in 4th finally putting some form back on the board.

Race 2 saw Dalton drive through the field in about 2 laps, and Deano expire after around 2 laps. What a battle lap after lap with Anthony Gatterlaro I had, which showed true Superkart spirit, going toe to toe, side by side at 150 ks an hour without a single touch. What a ball, I came in 5th with Gatts only a blink behind.

Race 3 and Deano was back. Dalton took the win with Dodgey in 2nd, and Deano rounding out the 3. I mistimed the turn back down the hill and rode the ripple strip which busted an exhaust bracket. I limped home in 9th.

Race 4  I lasted 2 laps and 111 expired with worn teeth on the sprocket like a grannies falsies. Shit happens! Deano took the win with Dalton in 2nd and Dodgey in 3rd.

The day was incredible, the best so far, Alan Dodge started 09 in great form winning the day, with Dean Crooke coming home 2nd. Dalton got 3rd. The 250 Inter class was an all 4 win to Jason Laker, with Jeff Reed doing likewise in the 125 G/B.

Dean Crooke set a new lap record once again with a 1.06.0069 in the maxes. Jeff Reed took the lap record in the 125 G/B class from what we can gather with a 1.02.6774.

The day just wouldn’t function without the work Shauna puts in, so thank you once again. Michelle Dodge, we couldn’t survive without your efforts as well, many thanks. The staff at Wakefield Park, you are all fantastic, it’s great to see smiling happy faces. Kayla, working with you to put it all together is such a breeze, thank you for making it enjoyable and simple…

A 7 week break before we return for round 2 at Eastern Creek, we’ll need it. Crookey’s returning to the resort!!!
